Poetry

This composition was originally written for my Creative Writing class on 10/17/17. The inspiration is the influence of poetry.

We naturally resist its power
Lost we go in mundanity
Controlled by desires and pleasure

It starts with curiosity
The pen is the syringe
Turning thoughts into words
Turning imagination into creation
So we inject our conscience with its virus

It touches all sexualities
It does not flag down nationalities
It is diversified in all cultures
It doesn't discriminate race

It plays in the imagination of children
It ages in the maturity of the elder
It revolts in the wild hearts of teens

It is not human anymore
It gains strength
So the beast is unshackled
The beast changes form

It is composed into a song
It takes emotion in a story
It hides in a painting
It is the silhouette of a sculpture

It cries in suffering
It is inspired by hope
It laughs in comedy
It rendezvouses with evil

The creator becomes a God
Immortality to a mortal
So it is transcendent
So it is omnipotent

It is impossible to stop its force
It quickly spreads from the creator to the reader
So the world becomes a poem

Iyá orisha alá iwó é

The following poem was inspired by the exposition "Held Hostage by the Sea" by R.G. Serrano presented at Miami Dade College Hialeah Campus on Oct. 20, 2017.

I cry in your name
Have mercy Ochun
Let the winds be gone
Let the waves away go

Dressed in yellow I dance
With honey, pumpkins and a sunflower
To you I sing with rhythm
My desire for freedom

Clean me from all harm
Join me through this voyage
To unknown lands
Pour your blessing into my hands

I embellish you with my devotion
For you are my everlasting hope
Ashe Ochun in this bembé
Iyá orisha alá iwó é

Ochun: Yoruba religion entity related to the Holy Mother
Iyá orisha alá iwó é: "Holy mother, cover me with your shawl"
bembé: a religious celebration
ashe: expression to invoke an entity
